Faces of Okinawa

Miguel De Jesus

From France

Q1 Can you introduce yourself?

A. My name is Miguel De Jesus, from the Bretagne of France, a town of Uminchu, or fishermen. Just like Okinawa it used to be a kingdom.

Q2 What made you come to Okinawa?

A. In my country France I was learning Karate, Goju-ryu. So I visited Okinawa, with a travelers' visa on my first visit.

Q3 What is your impression of Okinawa, before you came, and after? What is the good point and a bad point about Okinawa?

A. I knew a little about Okinawa before. On my first visit I just planned of staying here for the Christmas. But as I got to know such warm-hearted local people and their rich culture, I began to think of staying longer here.
My opinion as a citizen of Naha city, is that dispite the efforts of Naha and Okinawa city to appeal themselves as International cities, I find on the individual level the each citizens are not ready for it yet. Their awarenesses as international citizen seem poor at this point. However I know that they have a basic spirit to understand other countries' cultures and people, as symbolized in the Okinawan dialect Ichariba Chode, meaning "Once we meet, we are as brothers." So I expect Okinawans to challenge themselves more.

Q4 What do you think Okinawa can do with the opportunity of holding the Summit here? Is ther anything Okinawa should do?

A. It will be a great opportunity to see the leaders of the G8 countries and the media altogether here in Okinawa. It is certainly a chance for Okinawa to make itself a world resort destination, and also a chance to appeal the abilities of Okinawa in the area of industries as well. Do not make it a chance of the term of three days only. Think what you can do after the Summit instead, as it will determine the true value of Okinawa.

Q5 Any place you recommend to the visitors?

A. I was on a radio program on the other day, and I was asked exactly the same question. My desire, is to take the president Chirac to Okinawan folk club. Also Nakijin castle is my favorite place that I occasionally visit there.
