Outline of Okinawa

|
Okinawa is located in the south-westernmost
end of Japan, consisting of 48 islands including the main island. Its climate
is mild and humid, and between the summer and autumn seasons, typhoons
usually appear.
|
|
Its topography is mostly flat with decorations
of beautiful coral reefs along its coast.
Broad-leaved evergreen forests covers "Yanbaru",
the northern region of the Okinawa Island
and the westernmost Iriomote Island, and
serves as habitats of indigenous species
to the Islands.

At one time, Okinawa was known as an independent
kingdom called Ryukyu. During this medieval period, trade with the Ming
Dynasty (present China) and the southeast Asia was thriving. During the
World War II, battles between the Allied Forces and Japan were fought on
Okinawa, leading to a great number of casualties including local residents.
After 27 years occupation by United States, Okinawa was reverted to Japan
in 1972.

|
Today, Okinawa gathers popularity as a beach resort
place. It also is known for its rich culture. The culture of Ryukyu has
been inherited through the traditional folk dances and songs, lacquer ware,
weaving and dyeing textiles.
