Seas of Okinawa

At one time, Okinawa was known as an independent kingdom called Ryukyu. During this medieval period, trade with the Ming Dynasty (present China) and the southeast Asia was thriving. During the World War II, battles between the Allied Forces and Japan were fought on Okinawa, leading to a great number of casualties including local residents. After 27 years occupation by United States, Okinawa was reverted to Japan in 1972.
