U.S. President Clinton's Visit to "Heiwa no Ishiji (Cornerstone of Peace) " Monument

President Clinton is the first American President to visit Okinawa since the prefecture was returned to Japan's administration from U.S. military rule.
Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine guided the President around the monument. Mr. Clinton talked with bereaved family members first, then addressed his speech to the people of Okinawa.

Miyako high-school senior student, Machika Kawamitsu, who read out "The Peace Poem" at the Memorial Service for all victims of the Battle of Okinawa, held on June 23 Memorial Day, gave a Strelitzia reginae flower (Symbolic meaning : a bright future) to Mr. Clinton.
