Cities and Townships Hosted Events, Report 2.
Gushikawa City strives to promote international relations with Russia through cultural exchange in the performing arts.

Updated July 21, 13:00
Many cities and townships in Okinawa plan to invite leaders of the G8 nations during the Summit for a variety of exchange event with local people and Gushikawa City is no exception. City officials have invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit Gushikawa City during his stay on Okinawa.
Russia is famous for its classical ballet and music. Gushikawa City hopes to build a cultural relationship with Russia in the field of performing arts. Through the Gushikawa Citizens' Performing Arts Theater, the city hopes to establish cross-cultural relationships with Russia and further enhance people's interest in the performing arts. City officials are hopeful that by inviting President Putin, this cultural relationship will be made possible.
Gushikawa City and the Okinawa G8 Summit Host Preparation Council recently hosted The Russian Folk Ensemble "Original" performance on June 30th. After the performance, an international cultural exchange took place between the Gushikawa Boys' and Girls' Choir, the "Subaru" Folk Dance Group and the Russian folk dance members. The Russians taught a few dance steps to the local children's choir and Subaru members.
The members of the "President Putin Invitation Team," Mr. Yamashiro, Mr. Enokawa and Mr. Yoshizato, Director of the Citizens Performing Arts Theater, have worked hard to make this " dream invitation" come true.
"In the past, most art performances were only held on the U.S. Military Bases. However, overseas art performances are starting to gain a strong foothold in Okinawa, due largely to it becoming a part of the Japan Tour performances for the last 10 years. Gushikawa City hopes to be the center of the performing arts on Okinawa, especially after the Summit," says Mr. Yoshizato.
The "Invitation Team" plans to hold a Russian Fair at the city gymnasium during President Putin's stay on Okinawa. The team also hopes to introduce Russian vodka and Okinawan Awamori, as well as natural salt, health food, and pottery at the Fair.
