YOUNG LEADERS SUMMIT 2000 IN OKINAWA
PROPOSAL FROM OKINAWA - BUILDING A 21ST CENTURY OF PEACE AND COEXISTENCE

As a prelude to the G8 Summit which will see Heads of States coming to Nago from July 21-23, thirty representatives from 17 countries worldwide met in Okinawa last June 11 for the Young Leaders Summit 2000. The event was marked by four full days of activities, starting with exchange programs in Okinawan colleges and universities and culminating in workshop sessions where participants gathered together to discuss issues and draft proposals for the upcoming G8 Summit of world leaders.

An unmistakable sense of global ambiance filled the air as these young leaders from all over the world filled the halls of the Ginowan Convention Center for the welcome ceremony. The Governor of Okinawa, Keiichi Inamine, extended a warm welcome to all the participants and Yasushi Akashi. Chairman of the Japan Center for Preventive Diplomacy, delivered the keynote address. Other prominent guests included Mr. Harumi Nakashima from the Japan Foundation and, representing the Government of Japan, Issei Nomura, Ambassador in charge of Okinawan Affairs.

The Young Leaders Summit 2000 is the first major pre-Summit event held in Okinawa. It was sponsored by the Okinawa Prefecture Summit Secretariat, the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Japan Foundation.
