Tsuneo Fukuhara composes "Tsuki Nagami." Late 1960's: The magnum opus "Bashofu" is composed. Fumio Yara begins playing music in the U.S. military camps. Misako Oshiro debuts with "Kataomoi." Rock bands emerge in the late 1960's. Paul Ishigaki begins playing in the U.S. military bases. |

Sadao Chinen composes "Unjuga Nasaki Du Tanumariru." Keiko Kinjo debuts with "Omoi." It becomes a big hit. 1972: Yutaka Sadoyama, Shinya Mayonaka and others form the "Okinawa Folk Mura." "Duchuimuni" becomes a big hit. 1972: George Murasaki forms the band Murasaki. Kyabinasu, Condition Green, Kotobuki, and Medusa come out. The golden age of Okinawan rock begins. 1973-1974: The Ryukyu Festival is held. Shimauta folk music events are held in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Kyoto. Rinsho Kakdekaru, Yukichi Yamazato, Sadao China, Tetsuhiro Daiku, and Rinsuke Teruya make appearances. 1975: The Fumio Yara Trio tours the U.S. 1977: Rinken Teruya forms the Rinken Band. 1978: Sadao China releases the major debut album "Akabana." "Bye Bye Okinawa" becomes a hit. 1978: Yoriko Ganeko has a hit with "Musume-Jintoyo." |

1980: Yukichi Yamazato is awarded Japan Folk Music Award's Western Japan Prize. 1981: Tsneo Fukuhara gives the first public performance of "Toyomu" Folk Music, a poetry song. 1983: Sumiko Yoseyama releases first album "Introducing." 1983: The Peaceful Love Rock Festival is held. 1983: Shuken Maekawa has a hit with "Kanasando." 1985: Yukichi Yamazato awarded the Republic of Korea International Culture and Arts Award. 1986: Aiko Yohen has a smash with "Chimuganasa-bushi." 1988: World tour by Misako Koja, Yoriko Ganeko, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. 1988: Riken Band makes major debut with their album "Arigato." |

The Rinken Band song "Churajura" is used as the theme song for the NHK Television "Taiga" drama series. This year they participate in the Kohaku New Year's Eve Song Show on NHK. Hidekatsu has a huge hit with his debut single "Mirukumunari." Yasukatsu Oshima's major debut with the hit "Irayoi Tsukiyohama." Testsuhiro Daiku performs "Yunta Tujiraba" together with Kazutoki Umezu. |

March: Yachimun and Lushu appear at the Japan Open National Competition. March: Kiroro make an appearance at the Yamaha Music Festival and are awarded a Special Prize. June: Kiroro included in the recording of the album "Kid's Music Box Vol.14." June: Pasha Club puts out their second album "Nanafa." With the release of this album the band shortens its name to Pasha Club from Yukito Ara and Pasha Club. August: Release of the NeNes best of album "Koza." September: Peaceful Love Rock Festival is held. September: The Okinawa Blues Festival is held. This concert saw performances by Fusanozuke Kondo, Yukadan, WALTZ, the Katsuji Ishigaki Band and others. October: "Shimauta New Wave" was held. The NeNes, Rinken Band, and Pasha Club make appearances. This concert series gains popularity through the appearances of groups that use Okinawan folk music as a base and incorporate elements from other kinds of music. October: "Hae-no-Utage '96" held in Naha, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, Sasebo, and Fukuoka. Appearances by Yukito Ara with Sunday, Satoshi Kawamitsu and Rollie. October: Release of the "The Last Session" featuring Rinsho Kadekaru and Tsuneo Fukuhara. October: Hidekatsu founds Kajimaya Records. Release of the live versions of Hidekatsu's music on "Hidekatsu Live Session" and "Mi-haiyu" of Misa Kamei. October: Yuko Kyan, a Chatan High School student, wins a prize for excellence in the Fifth Music Quest Japan Competition. The Grand Prize was awarded to Takashi Taniguchi and other Prizes for Excellence were awarded to Ringo Shiina and AIKO. October: Ayane Ahane releases the debut single "Okina Kaze." October: Begin puts out their commercial song compilation "Begin CM Compilation." November: Kiroro release their Okinawa debut single "Ao-no-Jumon / Nagai Aida." December: Yutaka Sadoyama breaks a 19-year hiatus with the release of his album "Sayonara Okinawa." December: The 3rd Okinawa Version is held. From this time on the polling for this competition is collected from the listeners of FM Okinawa. December: Cocko puts out the recording "Cocko Like at Yellow White" on the Bounce Label of Tower Records. |

March: "Hina Matsuri - Yuntaku Live in Shimauta" is held with appearances by the NeNes, Sachiho Kojima, Yoko Nema and others. March: The Southern All-Stars release "Heiwa-no-Ryuka." March: Cocco make major debut. Single entitled "Countdown." Cocko changes name to Cocco. April: Kiroro releases second single "Mirai-e." April: Masao Shiroma, formerly of Island, begins solo efforts. The group ISLAND releases a best hits album entitled "Ballads Best." May: Release of "Asobina" by Itsuro Shimada and Kantaro Uchida, recorded in Okinawa. Katsuji Ishigaki is included in the album. May: Cocco releases album "Bougainvillea." July: Amana makes first appearance in "Donto Presents Summer of Love". Others appearing in this concert include the Donto Band. Dinka Dunku, Haruko Kuwana, Shuken Maekawa, Katsuji Ishigaki, Yachimun and Saike Fish. July: Release of Donto's self recorded album "Deep South." July: NeNes release "Akemodoro."They do a cover of the Southern All-Stars song "Heiwa-no-Ryuka." August: Release of a solo effort by Rinken Band member Tomoko Uehara. August: Release of Yasukatsu Oshima & Orchestra Bole's album "Nama du Wakare." August: Debut single release of Atsuko Hiyajo entitled "Koyi Kono Mama." March: Amana releases first album "Amana." April: The Okinawan Indies Band is the opening act in the Punk Band J.A.P. The main act was the Junky Jap Dogs and Ryukyu Crazy Pop Corn. From around this time Punk and Hardcore start to become lively in the Okinawa indies scene. April: B C Records starts out. Rinji Kadekaru releases "My Sweet Home Koza." Wataru Takada puts out "Juku-no-Haru." V.A. puts out the "Baku Yamanoguchi Tribute Album." May: Beginning of the Okinawan Music Expert Level "Nafin". Chieko Iha with Kuri Koda Quartet put out "Omorouta." Tsuneo Fukuhara puts out "Gaseisamen." June: Shakari releases first single "Towa-ni Hibikaseta-nara." July: Kotobuki puts out first major album "Tsuide Yukumono." The NeNes tour Europe in the summer. August: Yutaka Sadoyama puts out the best hits album "Yutaka Sadoyama Best Elekuia Years." August: Takashi Hirayasu puts out solo album "Kariyushi no Tsuki." November: Release of omnibus album "Flying Drug Okinawa Chudoku Vol. 1. January: Jigokuguruma release their first album "Jigokugurama." It tops everyone including national major group Speed. The band was established in 1996. January: Nose Water release their first album "Pan Jay." The band was established in 1991. July: The Suka Koa event "Bang! Holiday" is held. From Okinawa appearances were made by Anger From Ball, Mongol 800, Shaeka Hot Maniac and Jigokuguruma. July: Limited Okinawa release of Akira Shimoji's single "Kaze-no-Ayagu." Produced by Toshiki Kadomatsu. August: The Ishigaki-jima Island Music Festival is held. Appearances by Begin, Yasukatsu Oshiro, Yukito Ara with Sunday and the Kantaro Uchida Trio. August: The first admission free event "Crap Hands" held by Okinawa Indies Band. Appearances were made by Yatoware Kyuseishu, Mongol 800, Love Machinegun and others. It is scheduled to be continued as a series of concerts. September: Release of the movie soundtrack "Buta-no-Mukui." October: Bleach is included in the Tokyo independent label Benten's omnibus album "Benten Punk Bentou." October: Shakari releases first album "Kotoba-no-Kawari-ni."
