2 "The Cornerstone of Peace" Names to be Inscribed

At the Cornerstone of Peace, all the names of the people who have died during the Battle of Okinawa are inscribed. It corresponds to the people who died in the battle inside the territory of Okinawa Prefecture during the period of the Battle of Okinawa (from the moment when the U.S. army landed in the Kerama islands on March 26,1945 to the signature of the capitulation document on September 7th 1945). However, below are inscriptions of name of other people who have died in battle.

Okinawan Casualties

  1. Okinawan people who died inside or outside the prefecture as a result of the 15 years conflict beginning with the Manchurian Incident.

  2. Okinawan people who died inside or outside the prefecture within the year following September 7th,1945(however the names of Okinawan people who died of the atomic bombs radiation in the following year are inscribed notwithstanding the period stated above).

Casualties Originally from Other Prefectures or Other Countries

  1. People who died of war-related cause in the operations of the Battle of Okinawa in Japan's southwestern island area between March 22, 1944 and March 25, 1945, which was the period when Japan's 32nd Army was deployed in Okinawa.

  2. People who died of war-related cause in operations of the Battle of Okinawa between March 26, 1945 and September 7th 1945 in the southwestern islands area, excluding Okinawa.

  3. People who died of war-related cause in the year following September 7th, 1945 in OKinawa Prefecture.

Inscriptions

  1. The names of those lost in the war are inscribed in their native alphabet according to their nationality and place of origin. Okinawans are listed according to their municipality and aza(hamlet) of origin.

  2. Names are inscribed in horizontal order from left to right.

  3. The orders of inscription are as follows:

    1. The people from other prefectures: Classified by prefecture, in the ordar of the Japanese syllabary.

    2. The people from Okinawa: classified by section of villages and lot numbers, in the Japanese syllabary and seniority.

    3. The people from the United States of America: classified by millitary unit, in alphabetical order.

    4. The people from the United Kingdom: classified in alpabetical order.

    5. The people from the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea: classified order of the Hangul syllabary.

    6. The people from Taiwan, by the stroke count of the family name.
