| Airport Profile |
Ishigaki Airport was built in 1943 as a Naval Airport by the imperial Japanese Army. Private airlines began operating from the airport in June 1956. The runway and apron were upgraded to accommodate YS11 aircraft, which began operating from the airport in June 1968. The airport was then expanded in fiscal year 1972 to comply with the Aviation law and construction of a 1,500m runway was completed in May 1975. The runway and air security facilities were improved in accordance with passenger demand for larger aircraft, and the airport resumed service as a tentative jet airport in May 1979. Local consensus has since been reached for the construction of a new airport with a 2,000m-long runway and plans are currently in the development phase. |
